TIAR

Civilisation expands as the cold deserts thaw
Genocide and ecocide in the ‘empty’ lands
Lives of liberty/slavery on the new frontiers
Altogether elsewhere, vast
Herds of reindeer move across
Miles and miles of golden moss,
Silently and very fast.
— from The Fall of Rome, W.H. Auden

THE INTERNATIONAL ART RESEARCH (TIAR)
TIAR’s aim is to liberate art from space and disciplinary confines, involving the general public and the international arts community in an inclusive and larger cultural conversation about human research and artistic experience.
Artists, thinkers, scholars, activists, public intellectuals, students, other cultural and political practitioners, as well as other publics assemble at TIAR around a chosen subject, a focus theme of particular urgency shared across society. Driven by research around this topical issue—manifested typically as a long-term itinerary of thinking that is intermittently intercepted with public manifestations—a variety of programs in the areas of education, discourse, exhibitions, and publishing are realized, examining the topic in order to mobilize new ideas and negotiate their various meanings from multiple perspectives. This approach requires a move from the “mere” critique of how things are to articulating propositions as to how things could be otherwise, while—through the philosophy of sharing and mutualizing of competencies—encouraging and supporting surrounding communities to carry such propositions into their own respective initiatives.
TIAR organizes projects, conferences and exhibitions of contemporary art. With the goal of having a future permanent collection, TIAR focuses on an ongoing programme of temporary exhibitions. These exhibitions always have a strong social, experimental and research-based orientation, and they address topics from various artistic standpoints with a critical eye. Each project combines an exhibition with an extensive programme of related events. In addition to exhibitions, TIAR organizes artistic projects in public spaces and serves as curator for exhibitions for external parties.
TIAR supports Artists, Curators and Researchers all around the world.
“In its customary introversion, the arts community does not let well enough alone, but often extends itself just enough to instrumentalise the world around it as props for its own production. A prime example of this tokenism is the growing range of art projects based on a form of seemingly benevolent social science research. The research results (or works of art) are, more often than not, neither up to scratch academically nor do they imbue the information with any new artistic significance. They are forms of either pop information, inaccessible specialist data or, sadly, sensationalism. In contrast, a genuine form of awareness and constructive involvement necessitates commitment, erudition, confrontation and a recoiling from the superficiality of political correctness.”
